life and work

Hans Weidmann grew up as the son of the wood sculptor and turner Emil Weidmann in Kleinbasel . At his father's request, he completed an apprenticeship as a wood sculptor with him and from 1939 to 1941 attended the art class at the general trade school in Basel . His teachers were Arnold Fiechter , Albrecht Meyer and Walter Bodmer . Weidmann worked as a teacher at this school from 1943 to 1975 and taught figurative drawing .

From a young age, Hans Weidmann was filled with a thirst for freedom and wanderlust. At the age of 15 he rode his bike to Hamburg, then hiked to Yugoslavia on foot in 1933 and then on to Belgrade to finally arrive in Venice. Later trips took him to South and North America, North Africa, Australia, Alaska, Scandinavia, Greece, the Far East and again and again to India. On the travels he filled countless drawing pads. Weidmann's watercolors are among his masterpieces.

His knowledge of paint, wood and stone made him a sought-after restorer . Like many Basel artists, Weidmann designed lanterns for the Basel Carnival .

Hans Weidmann was an active member of «Kreis 48». The group included Heinrich Barth, Alex Maier, Romolo Esposito, Toni Rebholz, Julie Schätzle, Gustav Stettler, Jean-François Comment , Karl Glatt , Max Kämpf , Theo Lauritzen , Peter Moilliet , Paul Stöckli .
