Annemarie von Matt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Annemarie von Matt (born April 10, 1905 as Annemarie Gunz in Root , † November 27, 1967 in Stans ) was a Swiss painter , graphic artist and writer .

Life

Annemarie von Matt attended elementary school for seven years, and even as a child she liked to paint. She did not learn a trade, which was typical for a girl from a humble background at the time. After school she worked as a nanny and housemaid. From 1926 to 1928 she trained as a craftsperson with the goldsmith Martha Haefeli in Lucerne . She then created works in advance that were based on religious folk art . Between 1946 and 1955, she created works which she classed among the predecessors of concept art . She also wrote aphorisms and language games , which she supplemented with sculptures and material assemblages and interpreted further. From 1955 she hardly worked as an artist, but mainly devoted herself to collecting and cataloging.

From 1935 until her death she was married to the painter, sculptor and writer Hans von Matt (1899–1985) and lived in Stans . Her love affair with the central Swiss theologian , priest and writer Josef Vital Kopp , whom she met for the first time in 1940, shaped her work.

In the exhibition Annemarie von Matt - Resistible, in the Nidwalden Museum 2020, her artistic work was reworked and no longer viewed in the context of her relationships, but as the work of an independent artist who was ahead of her time with her fragmentary work.
