The Arbeitsgemeinschaft Berufsbildungforschungsnetz (AGBFN) is a federally direct, legally competent public-law institution based in Nuremberg . The aim is to improve the information infrastructure for scientific cooperation in vocational training research and to promote vocational training research through the exchange of data, documentation and research results. The relevant institutions of vocational training research in Germany and in 2008 around 700 vocational training researchers are represented in the working group.

The working group conducts a “Forum for Vocational Education and Training Research” at regular intervals and thematic workshops on current research topics in VET at irregular intervals.

The AGBFN has initiated projects to document vocational training research. One of the first products was “Reporting on Vocational Education and Training Research” in 1999. In 2005, the AGBFN set up the “Vocational Education and Training Literature Database” (LDBB) at the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, which was included in the VET repository in 2019.

The AG was founded in Nuremberg in 1991. The founding members were the Commission for Vocational and Business Education (BWP) of the German Society for Educational Sciences ( DGfE ), the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) and the Institute for Employment Research (IAB). The board is formed by one representative each from the BIBB, the IAB, the vocational and business education section of the DGfE, the research institutes in private and public sponsorship and the state institutes for school education (currently Bavaria). The chairman of the board is Arnulf Zöller (ISB). The prerequisite for the admission of member institutes is the proof that

  • the activity in vocational training and occupational research is long-term,
  • Experience and published results in occupational and educational research including media and curriculum research for vocational schools are given.
