Working group for orientation and educational assistance in Berlin

The Berlin working group Orientierungs- und Bildungshilfe eV (AOB) is an independent provider of adult education for young people and adults who want to learn to read and write. The aim is to support them in acquiring the written language. The target groups are those who do not know how to read / write, those who are familiar with reading / writing, who are functionally illiterate , dyslexic and, according to their own statements, “refugees and migrants” and people who “have not had good experiences with learning to read and write.” The courses offered by the Federal Office for Migarion and Refugees are expressly excluded.

The association was founded in 1977 by Marie Luise Oswald and others, making it the first association in Germany to begin literacy among German-speaking young people and adults. The recognized as charitable support is since 1980 member of the German Parity Welfare Association through and Senate Department for Education, Youth and Sports of the State of Berlin encouraged. In the same year, the Federal Ministry of Education and Science commissioned the AOB with a study on literacy in the Federal Republic of Germany, which was carried out by Marie Luise Oswald and Horst-Manfred Müller. The results were published two years later.

In addition, the working group is also active as a publisher and editor of a series of publications.
