Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios ( LEAR ; German  " League of Revolutionary Writers and Artists " ) was a Mexican association of revolutionary artists and writers.

The association was founded in 1933 after the "Syndicate of Technical Workers, Artists and Sculptors" was dissolved in the house of the visual artist and first President Leopoldo Méndez . The first secretary was Luis Arenal . The LEAR declared itself the Mexican section of the International Association of Revolutionary Writers , which was founded in 1930 by the Communist International in the Soviet Union . The members of the first hour included Juan de la Cabada , Pablo O'Higgins , Xavier Guerrero , Ermilo Abreu Gómez , Alfredo Zalce , Fernando Gamboa , Santos Balmori , Clara Porcet , Ángel Bracho and many others.

The members of the league spread revolutionary ideas in their writings and artistic works. With their work they committed themselves against national political developments, in particular the state censorship of art, but also against the political threat to world peace through war, the politics of Hitler and Mussolini , the Spanish civil war and for similar international, political issues.

After the liberal government in Mexico, constituted in 1934, finally granted artists more freedom in their work, the association dissolved again in 1938. The organ of the association was the newspaper Frente a Frente , for which Pablo O'Higgins also illustrated.
