Luis Arenal Bastar

Luis Arenal Bastar (* 1908 or 1909 in Teapa / Tabasco or Mexico City ; † May 7, 1985 in Mexico City) was a Mexican artist and a representative of muralism .

biography

In addition to his sister Angélica , who later became the wife of David Alfaro Siqueiros , Luis Arenal had a brother named Leopoldo . From 1927 to 1928 he studied law and sculpture in Mexico City and in 1929 went to the University of Arizona . In 1930 he started painting. Together with other well-known artists of this era, he painted the mural “La America Tropical” at the Chouinard School of Art in Los Angeles in 1932 . Arenal was the first secretary of the Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios and in 1937 a founding member of the Taller de Grafica Popular . Together with Alfaro Siqueiros he also painted the murals “Retrato de la Burguesia” and “La Marcha de la Humanidad” and in 1944 created two sculptures for Alfaro Siqueiros mural called “Cuauhtémoc contra el Mito”.
