The Association of Democratic Scientists (BdWi) (when it was founded: Association of Democratic Scientists ) is an association based in Marburg . According to its own statements, it has over a thousand members from the natural, human and social sciences who are interested in and active in an emancipatory science and education policy.

The Federation was founded in 1968 on the initiative of the sociologist Werner Hofmann and the political scientist Wolfgang Abendroth established, whereby the educational scientist Wolfgang Klafki , the lawyer Helmut Ridder , the rhetorician Walter Jens and the philosopher Jürgen Habermas of the founding fathers were - at that time mostly younger male professors especially Humanities provenance. In July 1972 it was reconstituted in Marburg. During the reconstitution, the BdWi spoke out against the radical decree of February 1972, which provided for the verification of the constitutional loyalty of applicants and members of the public service. The Federation has been registered as an association at the Marburg District Court since 1974 .

Its objectives are: formulation of the democratic mandate of science, promotion of the democratic participation of all members of the university in self-administration, research and teaching and defense against discriminatory measures against scientists for political reasons (radical decree). In 1968 it tended to be a solidarity alliance of left-wing university professors who wanted to create a political counterweight to the authors of the Marburg Manifesto (April 1968) and the Freedom of Science Association founded in 1970 . Since the 1990s, students can also become members of the BdWi.

At congresses and seminars as well as in scientific publications and political statements, the BdWi takes a public position on questions of science, research and university development and was an official co-supporter of the data protection demonstration, freedom instead of fear , which is critical of surveillance . Together with the RLS , the association holds an autumn academy lasting several days in the Werftpfuhl educational facility , which is supported by other organizations. The Helle Panke association was also involved in the event until 2012 .
