Life and work

After graduating from high school in Berlin-Friedrichshagen, Marquardt studied chemistry at the Technical University of Berlin from 2008 to 2013 without obtaining a degree. Marquardt is currently studying politics, administration and sociology at the Fernuniversität Hagen .

As a photojournalist, Marquardt has made several trips along the escape routes and to Afghanistan and presented his pictures and experiences in lectures nationwide. He took part in the Sea-Eye relief mission and was able to help over 1,000 people on the Mediterranean. He was arrested by police officers around the G20 summit in Hamburg 2017 and then criticized that criticism of the police operation had been rejected.

politics

In addition to his studies, Marquardt was a member of the board of the free association of student bodies (fzs) from 2011 to 2013 . From 2010 to October 2014 Marquardt was a member of the TU Berlin Board of Trustees. He is a board member of the Solidarity Modern Institute (ISM) and was a board member of the Association of Democratic Scientists (BdWi) from 2015 to 2019 .

Commitment to Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen

From 2009 to 2015 Marquardt was a member of the Green Youth and has been a member of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen since 2011. In 2013 he was elected political director of the Federal Association of Green Youth. On October 11, 2014, Marquardt was elected spokesman for the federal association. At the federal congress in November 2015 , Marquardt was unable to run again due to the age limit for members of the Green Youth.

In parallel to his involvement in the youth organization, Marquardt also began to get involved with the party himself; he sees his thematic focus in the areas of migration , education and science policy . At the assembly meeting for the election list of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Berlin for the Bundestag election 2017 he was elected to 6th place, and ran parallel in the Bundestag constituency Treptow-Köpenick , but did not move into parliament.

Change to the European Parliament

In November 2018, he ran for the party's federal delegate conference for the European election list, and the delegates nominated him for 8th place on the list. His party won 21 of the 96 German mandates in the European elections with 20.5 percent of the vote, so Marquardt moved in straight away. He joined the group Die Grünen / EFA , for which group he is a member of the Development Committee , of which he was elected vice-chair. He is also a deputy member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs .

reception

Because of his travels on the escape routes, he repeatedly takes part in debates and criticizes that the "EU does not allow safe escape routes". He also contradicted Federal Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière that refugee organizations would work with people smugglers.

Marquardt is responsible for the #Civilfleet project, which raised money for chartering a boat for sea rescue in the Mediterranean. The fundraising organized by Klaas Heufer-Umlauf raised almost 300,000 euros. The money was mainly used for a several month charter of the Golfo Azzurro as well as its conversion and registration. The ship was not used.

He currently lives in Lesbos, Greece, and experiences the situation in the Moria refugee camp and the shift to the right in the population first hand and reports on it on his Twitter account. Thereupon he and other activists started the campaign "Leave no one behind".
