Herbert Claas

Herbert Claas (* 1941 ) is a German social scientist. Claas was Vice President of the Philipps University of Marburg until his retirement on November 30, 2006 and represented the fields of sociology and Marxism research.

After studying political science, German literature and sociology in Frankfurt, Tübingen and Marburg, he became a research assistant at the Political Institute under Wolfgang Abendroth in 1968 , and from 1969 at the Sociological Institute under Werner Hofmann . He received his doctorate in 1975. Herbert Claas had been employed as an academic adviser at the institute since 1979. From 1980 to 1981 Herbert Claas was visiting professor for sociology at the Berlin University of the Arts for a year . His activities in research and teaching were literary and cultural sociology .

For a long time, he was responsible for study and examination advice in the department. In 2001 he was elected Dean of Studies for the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy and, in 2002, Vice President for Studies and Further Education at Philipps University. During his tenure, he made a significant contribution to the rapid introduction of the modularized courses, which in some cases met with protest. In 2006, Herbert Claas left the university for reasons of age.
