The youth education center resides in the listed buildings of the former Johannaheim orphanage , which was donated by the Berlin industrialist Eduard Arnhold in 1907 as an orphanage for young girls. The representative building was designed by Paul Baumgarten , at the same time a park with a kitchen garden was created under the influence of Art Nouveau. The Johannaheim was characterized by a progressive and artistic-oriented pedagogy. It had its own school. The best-known student at the orphan school was the actress Brigitte Helm , who was discovered by director Fritz Lang at a private performance of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream on the natural stage in Arnholds Gutspark in Hirschfelde and who he starred in his film Metropolis .
Due to the inflation of the twenties, the foundation was deprived of its financial basis, so that the orphanage had to leave the building in 1929 and move to a smaller dwelling in Potsdam. The Berlin district of Reinickendorf then ran a children's home and orphan school there, where the reform pedagogue Adolf Reichwein also taught in the 1930s .
Between 1951 and 1958, the Johannaheim building was used as the Werftpfuhl youth work center. From 1959 they served under the direction of Reiner Werner as a special home for mentally damaged children with an attached home school. From 1964 to 1990, in which to combine the special homes for psycho diagnostics and pedagogical-psychological therapy associated home Werftpfuhl housed.

There are 120 places with shower and toilet in single, double and multi-bed rooms. The target group are educationally disadvantaged young people.
Thematically, political and social issues such as “constructive conflict management, anti-racism training, democracy and participation, life and career orientation , application training , gender-specific role models , addictions and Europe” are addressed .
Basis of educational work
The educational work of the youth training center Kurt Löwenstein eV is based on the educational experiences of the falcon movement. Kurt Löwenstein was committed as Neukölln city school councilor and chairman of the " Reichsarbeitsgemeinschaft der Kinderfreunde " in the Weimar Republic for children's rights and a fundamental school reform.
