About this picture

Werneuchen is a north-east of Berlin situated town in the district of Barnim of the state of Brandenburg . As a city in the “closer interlinked area”, the Werneuchen basic center belongs to the European metropolitan region of Berlin / Brandenburg .

geography

Werneuchen is located on the Barnim , a mountain range between Berlin and Eberswalde . The landscape is shaped by the last ice age. The Weesower Luch nature reserve and lakes such as the Haussee in Seefeld and the Gamensee are evidence of this time . The city is located in the Barnimer Feldmark Regional Park .

The urban area borders in the north on the office of Biesenthal-Barnim , in the east on the offices in Falkenberg-Höhe and Barnim-Oderbruch , in the south on the city of Altlandsberg and in the west on the city of Ahrensfelde and the city of Bernau .

City structure

According to its main statute, the city is divided into the following districts:

The following residential spaces are also shown: Amselhain, Bahnhofssiedlung, Elisenhof, Rudolfshöhe, Steinau, Stienitzaue, Werftpfuhl and Werneuchen-Ost.

The city council of Werneuchen decided on December 19, 2013 to make the districts of Seefeld and Löhme, which had previously been connected to one district, independent. The separation became legally effective in the local elections on May 25, 2014.

history

The originally Wendish settlement of Werneuchen was first mentioned in 1247 by the signature of pastor Johann de Warnow as a witness on two documents. On April 24th or 25th, 1432, the city was completely destroyed by a Hussite troop who tried in vain to conquer Bernau on April 23rd . Since the city, unlike Bernau, had no strong fortifications, the residents had not tried to defend themselves, but fled. During the Thirty Years War, the city suffered greatly from looting and burned down almost completely in 1637. In the Middle Ages, the city became known through the Wröhe , a voluntary jurisdiction of the citizens to regulate land disputes and damage. It took place weekly or monthly under a linden tree in the church square.

Although it had been granted city rights since 1375 , the place never had supraregional importance. Theodor Fontane describes him in the walks through the Mark Brandenburg .

For the history of Krummensee, Löhme, Seefeld, Weesow and Willmersdorf up to 1874 see Amt Löhme .

With the construction of the Berlin – Wriezen railway line , the route of which via Werneuchen was significantly promoted by a local association (opened in 1898), Werneuchen's transport links improved significantly for the first time. In 1906 Werneuchen got a power station and electric street lighting. Between 1910 and 1930 a number of new residential areas such as Rudolfshöhe, Amselhain, Stienitzaue and Werneuchen-Ost were built. The regional train connection with Berlin remains an important addition to the Berlin S-Bahn, which ends at Ahrensfelde . However, this did not lead to large-scale industrialization, nor did Berlin-related suburbanization take place .

Werneuchen becomes a garrison: keys are handed over in 1937

From 1937 won Werneuchen new importance as a military airfield of the German Air Force ( Jagdfliegerschule  1). After the end of the Second World War , the Werneuchen airfield was expanded considerably as a military airfield for the Soviet garrison and was used for military purposes by the Western Group of the Soviet Army (GSSD / WGT) through front-bomb, reconnaissance and helicopter units of the 16th Air Army until their withdrawal in 1993. Today it serves as a sports airfield .

The Soviet special camp No. 7, an internment camp , was located in Weesow after the Second World War and until August 1945 ; it was moved to Sachsenhausen .

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , the Werneuchen office with its seat in Werneuchen was formed as part of the formation of offices in the state of Brandenburg. The Minister of the Interior of the State of Brandenburg approved the formation of the Werneuchen office on July 13, 1992. July 31, 1992 was set as the date on which the office was established. The office initially consisted of nine communities in the former districts of Bernau and Bad Freienwalde : Hirschfelde, Krummensee, Löhme, Seefeld, Weesow, Willmersdorf, Schönfeld, Tiefensee and the city of Werneuchen. On December 31, 1998, the municipality of Löhme was incorporated into the municipality of Seefeld. As of December 31, 2001, the community Weesow was incorporated into the city of Werneuchen. On October 26, 2003, the communities of Hirschfelde, Krummensee, Schönfeld, Seefeld, Tiefensee and Willmersdorf were incorporated into the city of Werneuchen. The Werneuchen office was dissolved, and the city of Werneuchen is now vacant. Four districts sued the state constitutional court of Brandenburg unsuccessfully against this decision. The district of Seefeld-Löhme was divided into the two districts of Seefeld and Löhme in 2013.

Werneuchen belonged to the Oberbarnim district until July 1, 1950 , then came to the Niederbarnim district and on July 25, 1952 to the Bernau district in the GDR district of Frankfurt (Oder) . Today's Barnim district was formed on December 6, 1993 .

Today's urban area is identical to the area of the Werneuchen office that existed from 1992 to 2003 .

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the city of Werneuchen

The coat of arms was approved on August 10, 2001.

Blazon : "Under a green shield head, covered with a silver double lintel rafter, in silver on a green ground a green linden tree."

The linden tree in Werneuchen's coat of arms goes back to a seal from 1670. The oak prevailed as a tree species in the 19th century. In 2000, the state archives of Brandenburg temporarily prohibited the use of the coat of arms, since a single tree does not distinguish it from other coats of arms. Until the final clarification, the city has a newly designed coat of arms for legal reasons.

Today's coat of arms with the “double lintel rafter” added above in silver on a green background, which is reminiscent of the first letter of the city's name, comes from the design of the Erfurt heraldist Frank Diemar .

Economy and Infrastructure

New solar power plant at Werneuchen airfield

The former agricultural town of Werneuchen is still strongly characterized by agriculture and forestry in the municipality . Fruit growing dominates on the border with the Märkisch-Oderland district . The city itself has numerous smaller, primarily craft businesses, but also larger companies, for example in the food industry (e.g. Zuegg AG ). Together with BBG Brandenburgische Boden GmbH, it maintains several commercial areas. The ADAC operates a driving safety center in Werneuchen. In the north, at the Gamensee in the Gamengrund , local recreation, leisure and tourism are in the foreground. A campsite in Tiefensee on the Großer Gamensee offers overnight accommodation.

Aldi-Nord is based with one of its regional companies in the Seefeld district of Werneuchen, where it also has a large central warehouse.

With the Weesow-Willmersdorf solar park , EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg is planning the largest solar park in Germany on an area of 164 hectares in Werneuchen . EnBW wants to refinance the solar park exclusively through the sales proceeds of the energy on the free market; no state payments are to be made. According to EnBW, this is possible because the costs of photovoltaics have fallen by more than 80% within a decade. In October 2019, EnBW made the final investment decision. Accordingly, construction should start in 2020 and commissioning should take place in the same year. The company specifies a high double-digit million amount as the cost of the project, which has an output of more than 180 MW.

Rail transport

The Werneuchen train station and the Seefeld stop are on the Wriezener Bahn . They are served by the regional train line RB 25 ( Berlin Ostkreuz –Werneuchen). The line is operated by the Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn (NEB) in the Berlin-Brandenburg transport association, the Ostbrandenburg regional network of DB Netz is the operator of the railway infrastructure.

Local rail transport between Werneuchen and Tiefensee was canceled by the State of Brandenburg on December 10, 2006, after the connection to Wriezen had been discontinued in the 1990s. The train stations Tiefensee and Werftpfuhl were closed. The Werneuchen entry signal - Tiefensee section has now been bought by the Mittenwalder Eisenbahnimmobiliengesellschaft, which already owns the Tiefensee - Sternebeck section. The section has been leased to RegioInfra since 2013 .
