About this picture

Ziethen is a municipality on the northeastern edge of the Barnim district , on the border with the Uckermark . It is administered by the Joachimsthal (Schorfheide) office.

Community structure

Ziethen consists of the districts Groß-Ziethen and Klein Ziethen as well as the residential areas Albrechtshöhe, Försterei Groß-Ziethen, Luisenfelde, Sperlingsherberge and Töpferberge.

history

Groß-Ziethen and Klein Ziethen belonged to the Angermünde district in the province of Brandenburg since 1817 and to the Eberswalde district in the GDR district of Frankfurt (Oder) from 1952 . Both places have been in the Brandenburg district of Barnim since 1993.

The municipality of Ziethen was formed on February 1, 2002 from the neighboring villages of Groß-Ziethen and Klein Ziethen.

French religious refugees, so-called refugees or Huguenots , found a new home in Brandenburg in Groß Ziethen and Klein Ziethen . In 1686 the first 16 refugee families (from Hainaut in today's Belgium) were settled in Klein Ziethen. The place must have already existed at the time, but was largely deserted. In both villages colonist communities gradually emerged, each with a church and a preacher, school and teacher.

The immigrants brought fine fruit and vegetables from France and introduced tobacco cultivation in the Uckermark . The latter in particular was a much more lucrative business than growing grain for the local population. Their possible economic advancement and their privileges were viewed with great suspicion by the locals. The officials of the surrounding communities tried to curtail the privileges of the Huguenot families. However, the people of Ziethen were able to successfully defend themselves against this.

The parishes of Groß-Ziethen and Klein Ziethen still belong to the French Reformed Church District of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia.
