Radar tower

The former Weesow radar tower is a concrete structure from the Second World War . It stands on the Spitzberg on the northwestern outskirts of the village Weesow , a district of the city of Werneuchen , 50 meters away from the state road 235 to Willmersdorf . The radar tower is often incorrectly referred to as a flak tower .

history

The Weesow radar tower was erected in late 1943 / early 1944. It was part of the test site for ground-based radar systems at Werneuchen airfield . In a secret document from the Reich Aviation Ministry it says: "The branch offices of the E-points, where the focus is on testing the ground radio measuring devices, are in Weesow (3 km NW Werneuchen) and Tremmen (10 km SW Nauen )."

So-called panorama radio measuring devices were tested on the Weesower Tower, primarily for monitoring the airspace. The Lorenz company tested the “Propeller” rotary detector here in 1944, but it was completely destroyed by fire. Technical components of the FuG 200 ship search device were used for “propellers” .

It is not known how long the radar research was carried out in Werneuchen including Weesow. At the time of the occupation of the city of Werneuchen and the airfield there by Soviet troops on April 18, 1945, the test site had been relocated and the operating teams had been evacuated.

Today the privately owned Weesow radar tower is a listed building . The former workshop barracks and the accommodations of the test team are no longer available.
