Margherita von Brentano

Margherita von Brentano (born September 9, 1922 on the Sauerburg ; † March 21, 1995 in Berlin ) was a German philosopher and professor at the Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin).

biography

Margherita von Brentano studied history, German and English in Berlin and Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1948 she did a PhD with Martin Heidegger . In 1948/49 she published the Franco-German magazine La rencontre - the meeting . As an editor at Südwestfunk , von Brentano worked from 1947 to 1956 for school and youth radio. In 1956 she returned to Berlin as an assistant to Wilhelm Weischedel and worked at the Philosophical Institute of the Free University of Berlin. From 1970 to 1972 she was the first vice-president of the university, from 1972 professor.

Margherita von Brentano was actively involved in the political conflicts of her time, such as the peace movement against NATO rearmament in the 1950s. One of her central themes was the equality of women at the university. Since 1995, the year of her death, the Free University of Berlin has awarded the Margherita von Brentano Prize annually to particularly outstanding projects in the advancement of women and women research . As the daughter of the diplomat Clemens von Brentano (1886–1965), she belongs to the extensive family of artists, politicians and scientists of the Brentanos . She was the second wife of the sociologist of religion and Judaism Jacob Taubes .
