Peter McLaughlin (* 1951 ) is an American professor of philosophy with a closer focus on the theory of science and the history of science as well as the history of philosophy in the early modern period.

After studying ethology , philosophy and the history of science at the University of Pennsylvania and the Free University of Berlin - where he received his doctorate (Dr. phil.) In 1986 - he became a lecturer at Tel Aviv University in the same year . In 1987 he was a postdoc at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . Between 1988 and 1989 he was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin , and until 1999 he was a research assistant at the University of Konstanz . Meanwhile - from 1995 to 1996 - he was visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In 1998 he completed his habilitation in Konstanz.

After Peter McLaughlin was a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin between 2000 and 2003 , he has held a professorship at the Philosophical Department of Heidelberg University since 2003 .
