The Arbore (or Marle ) are a numerically small group of people (approx. 3,000 people) who live in four villages in the southwest of Ethiopia on Chew Bahir (formerly Lake Stefanie). Ar means bull and bore land.

Like most pastoral groups in the region, the Arbore live mainly from their herds (milk, meat and blood ) as well as from cultivated millet and other agricultural products which are grown in the alluvial land of the Weyto River .

The Arbore language belongs to the Omo-Tana languages , a subgroup of the Cushitic languages , which in turn belong to the Afro-Asian languages .

Immediate neighbors are the Tsamay , the Borana and the Hamar .

society

The Arbore live in the four main villages Murale, Eegude, Kulam and Gandarab. Their society is divided into clans. There is also a cross-clan system of generation classes, each comprising four age groups, the age difference between the members of which is a maximum of nine years. There are also marriage classes . Belonging to clan, generation, age and marriage class determines marriage rules and norms of behavior. Each village has a political and a religious leader, each elected from certain clans. This happens about every 40 years, when the generation class that has ruled up to that point hands over power to the next. For girls, circumcision is a prerequisite for recognition as a woman and for marriage.
