Archaeological window in Bad Windsheim
The Archaeological Window is located in the Middle Franconian town of Bad Windsheim .
location
The archaeological window is located in the northwest of the market square of Bad Windsheim on the Erbsenstraße leading across the square in the corner between the town hall of the city on the west side of the square and the former district court building, which closes the north side of the square and used as a hotel.
history
During construction work to redesign the market square in June 2000, remains of the wall underneath of buildings from the 12th to 15th centuries and a burial ground from the 8th to 10th centuries were discovered. The cellar walls were made of plaster of paris , which at that time only wealthier people could afford. It was decided to open the excavations to the public. Under the direction of Thomas Spyra, who, as the city's construction and project manager, was also responsible for monument protection and archeology, the basement area was roofed over and the archaeological window, which was completed in 2001, was built.
To finance a “city building block campaign”, over 340 brass paving stones were “sold” and used in the pavement of the market square. Numerous donations were also received.
description
The archaeological window consists of three glass pyramids on the market square, which rest on a stone base. The larger of the pyramids is about 4 meters, the two smaller ones are about 2 meters square. Through the panes you can look into historical cellars from the time Bad Windsheim was founded. On the adjoining terrace, a glass plate gives an insight into a fountain shaft from the 15th century.
The cellars below the market square can be viewed during city tours. Finds from the history of the town from the 10th to the 14th century are displayed in several showcases as excavation results.
