The Abdera Archaeological Museum ( Greek Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Αβδήρων Archeologikó Mousío Avdíron ) is located in Odos Dimitrio Lazaridi in the northern Greek town of Avdira in the Xanthi regional district .

history

The reason for the establishment of an archaeological museum was the excavations begun in 1950 in ancient Abdera . First, however, the finds from there were housed in the Museum of Kavala . In 1973 they were transferred to the Komotini Museum. In 1976 the Ministry of Culture ordered the construction of its own museum in Avdira, but the building permit from the municipality was not granted until 1985. The construction work lasted from 1989 to 1992. The inauguration took place on January 20, 2000.

construction

The exhibits cover the period from the 7th century BC. BC to the 13th century AD. The museum follows an educational-didactic approach with the aim of promoting the education of primary and secondary school students. At the same time, it is aimed at historically and archaeologically trained visitors.

The division was therefore made into the areas of public life , private life and burial customs . In the area of public life one finds objects from the spheres of religion, administration, war and coinage; Private life is understood here to mean the areas that can be subsumed under categories such as construction, trade, handicrafts and workshops, domestic work, clothing, but also children's life . Finally, finds from graves are exhibited, which should clearly illustrate the changes in attitudes and the development of the rite. Explanatory texts, images, drawings and maps provide visitors with orientation and additional information.

The design of the building goes back to the architects C. Polychroniou and N. Filippidis. The workshops and warehouses as well as the technical systems are located in the basement. On the ground floor there are rooms for workshops, the service areas, a multi-purpose hall and an exhibition room. On the floor there are offices and a room for special uses.
