The Malatya Archaeological Museum ( Turkish Malatya Müzesi ) is located near the city center of Malatya at a square at the end of Fuzuli Caddesi . It mainly shows finds from the nearby settlement hill Arslantepe .

history

After the excavations in Arslantepe and Gelinciktepe in the 1930s, the finds were brought to the exhibition of the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara . This gave rise to the idea of ​​a museum in Malatya. It was founded in 1969 in a temporary building at the National Park (Millet Parkı) and opened to the public in 1971. In 1975 the construction of the current building began at what was then Kernek Park, which opened in 1979.

The museum's exhibition area is spread over three rooms and the entrance area. In the entrance and the first room (Arslantepe Salonu 1) finds from Arslantepe are presented, including swords forged from arsenic bronze from around 3000 BC. BC, the oldest known swords. The second room (Karakaya Salonu) contains finds from rescue excavations that the museum carried out in several locations that were flooded by the Karakaya Reservoir , including İzoli, Cafer Höyük , Değirmentepe Höyük, İmamoğlu Höyük, Köşgerbaba Höyük and Pirot Höyük. In the third room (Arslantepe Tematik Salonu), half a floor higher, objects from Arslantepe are shown again in thematic exhibitions. In the outdoor area of ​​the museum, pithoi and numerous steles from all epochs from the Hittite to the Ottoman period are set up.
