Archibald Hamilton, 1st Baronet

Sir Archibald Hamilton, 1st Baronet (* before 1650 ; † 1709 ) was a Scottish nobleman.

He was the youngest son of James Hamilton of Udston († 1635) from his marriage to Margaret Hamilton of Barncleuch.

His parents came from various branch lines of the Clan Hamilton . He grew up on the Barncleuth estate in Lanarkshire , which his mother brought into the marriage.

He became wealthy as a merchant in Edinburgh , acquired the Rosehall estate in Lanarkshire and was raised to hereditary baronet of Rosehall in the County of Lanark on April 10, 1703 in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia .

He was married at least twice, first to Catherine Jardine and second to Anne Murray.

From his first marriage he had a daughter:

  • Margaret Hamilton (around 1666–1704), ⚭ 1693 James Hamilton, 3rd Laird of Dalzell, 8th Laird of Orbieston (1670–1727)

From his second marriage he had a daughter and two sons:

  • Euphemia Hamilton, ⚭ 1699 Charles Hamilton (* 1678), younger son of William Hamilton, 3rd Laird of Wishaw († 1724)
  • Sir James Hamilton, 2nd Baronet (1682–1750), MP for Lanarkshire, ⚭ 1707 Hon. Frances Stuart, daughter of the 4th Lord Blantyre
  • Sir Hugh Hamilton, 3rd Baronet (after 1683–1755), ⚭ 1750 Margaret Stirling

He also had two other daughters whose mother is not recorded in a document.

  • Elizabeth Hamilton, ⚭ Robert Hamilton of Bourtree Hill
  • Anne Hamilton, ⚭ William Cuninghame of Brownhill
