The archive for the study of modern languages and literatures , the oldest neo-philological journal, was founded in 1846 by Ludwig Herrig and Heinrich Viehoff . The first two volumes were published by Julius Bädeker Verlag Elberfeld and Iserlohn. After that, the magazine was published by Georg Westermann Verlag Braunschweig (now Westermann Printing and Publishing Group ) for 120 years . The magazine has been published by Erich Schmidt Verlag Berlin since 1979 .

Founded to promote and train language and literature teachers at schools and universities and to give modern philologies adequate publication opportunities, the magazine has developed into an integrating specialist organ with an increasingly international character. The essays, smaller articles and reviews appear in German, English and Romance languages.
