Ardross Castle

Ardross Castle is a castle about 8 km northwest of Alness in the Averon river valley in the rural Ardross region in the Highland administrative district of Scotland .

history

George Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland , bought the 240 km² estate from Ardross in the late 18th century and sold it to Sir Alexander Matheson, 1st Baronet , in 1845 for £ 90,000 .

Matheson improved the cultivation of the land and placed the property under the management of William MacKenzie , an engineer. By 1875 the number of tenants quintupled to over 500 and around 4.9 km² of arable land could be gained.

Architect Alexander Ross was commissioned to remodel Ardross Castle in the Scottish Baronial style, carried out by Irish workers who settled in the nearby settlement of Dublin . After Alexander Matheson's death, his son and heir, Sir Kenneth Matheson , sold the property in 1898 to Charles William Dyson Perrins , a Highland Light Infantry captain who was involved in the Worcester Royal Porcelaine Company and Lea & Perrins ( Worcestershire sauce ).

The property was split up and sold in 1937. Mr. and Mrs. Austin Mardon bought Andross Castle and 32 acres of land. They lived there until 1983, when the property was sold to the McTaggart family for restoration work.
