The Arena Theater (Slovak Divadlo Aréna ) is one of the oldest theaters in Bratislava .

It was founded in 1828 and initially played on an open-air stage in the form of a Roman amphitheater, hence the name. The current theater building was built in 1898 and stands between Janko Kráľ Park and the Old Bridge ( Starý most ) in the Petržalka district .

Numerous Hungarian, Austrian and German theater companies performed here from the time it was founded until the end of World War II . After the end of the war, the theater was closed and served as a warehouse for the Czechoslovak state television . A group around the pantomime Milan Sládek revitalized the theater, the reopening took place in 1997. Juraj Kukura has been the director of the Arena Theater since 2003 .
