Arend Buchholtz (born March 29, 1857 in Riga ; † October 29, 1938 in Berlin ) was a library assistant and editor for the Rigas City Gazette , a corresponding member of the Society for History and Archeology of the Baltic Provinces of Russia and the first director of the Berlin City Library .

Life

Arend Buchholtz was a son of August Wilhelm Buchholtz and his wife Henriette, née Bärnhoff.

On January 1, 1890, Buchholtz began his service as Berlin's magistrate librarian. In 1892 he took over the management of the city's public libraries. Through him, efforts to found a central Berlin city library received a decisive boost. Buchholtz handed the Berlin magistrate a memorandum in which he called for reading halls to be set up next to the public libraries. According to the resolution of the Berlin city council on February 3, 1898, the magistrate had to take care of the establishment of a central library. However, it took even more intensive efforts by Buchholtz until the final decision of the city council to found a city library was taken on June 6, 1901.

Buchholtz created a systematic division of the holdings into 18 main groups, which will continue to be used by the main library.
