Aretes ( Greek Ἀρέτης ) was a Macedonian equestrian commander of Alexander the great in the 4th century BC.
By Waldemar Heckel , Aretes is used in the Battle of Granikos in 334 BC. Identified a warrior named "Aretis" who had tried in vain to pass his lance on to Alexander after his lance had broken.

During the fight, his department and the were Paionians under Ariston to support the hard beleaguered mercenary cavalry of Menidas drafted. At an unknown time before, Aretes had taken command of the Lancers from Protomachus, who had them in the Battle of Issus in 333 BC. Had led. Nothing more is reported from him after Gaugamela.
