Aria ( Persian آریا) is a male and female given name that is widespread in the Persian-speaking area and in India . Its meaning is “noble”, “honorable” or “pure”. In the Avesta, the holy book of Zoroastrianism , today's Tajiks and Iranians appeared under the name "Arya" (or in German Aryans). The Iranian peoples who lived in 2000 BC called themselves “Aryas”. They immigrated to the Iranian highlands and became the ancestors of today's Persians (Tajiks), Kurds, Pashtuns and Baluch, as well as the Indo-Aryans who immigrated to India.

In Europe, Aria is also a female Italian given name, which translated into German means "air".

Variants of the name are Arian , Aryan, Arya and Aaryan.
