Arif Taifur

Arif Taifur ( Arabic عارف طيفور, DMG ʿĀrif Ṭaifūr ; * 1945 in as-Sulaimaniya Governorate ) is an Iraqi politician and currently Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Iraq. He is a Kurd .

Arif Taifur studied at the University of Baghdad . In 1974 he fled to Iran after the Iraqi Ba'ath regime put down a Kurdish revolt. In 1976 he joined the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP) and returned to Iraq to establish a provisional leadership of the KDP. Since then he has been a key figure in this traditionalist party , now led by Masud Barzani , whose goal is an autonomous Kurdistan .

After the first free elections in Iraq since Saddam Hussein's overthrow, which took place on January 30, 2005, and in which the Kurdish party alliance consisting of the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) , the Democratic Patriotic Alliance of Kurdistan , with 25.7% of the The second strongest power voted, the new Iraqi National Assembly elected Arif Taifur as deputy to the Sunni parliamentary speaker Hajim al-Hasani .
