Arille Carlier

Arille Carlier (born September 26, 1887 in Monceau-sur-Sambre, Charleroi , † May 17, 1963 in Charleroi) was a Belgian politician and lexicographer.

life and work

Carlier attended high school in Charleroi. He studied law and worked for Jules Destrée from 1911 to 1914 . He was involved in the Flemish-Walloon conflict , was a member of the Assemblée Wallonne, an informal parliament, from 1912 and founded associations, namely in 1938 (with others) the Société historique pour la Défense et l'Illustration de la Wallonie, from the 1960's Institut Jules-Destrée emerged .

In 1941 he was arrested by the German occupiers as a resistance fighter and remained in German prisons until August 1943, most recently in Diez .

Carlier left behind an extensive manuscript of a dictionary of Charleroi Walloon, edited in three volumes by Willy Bal .
