Aristoxenus (medic)
Aristoxenos ( ancient Greek Ἂριστόξενος ) was a Greek doctor of the 1st century AD.
He was a student of Alexandros Philalethes and thus belonged to the medical school of the Herophilees, whose tradition went back to the Alexandrian doctor Herophilos of Chalcedon (around 330 BC - around 255 BC). The teaching facility of this school was located in a place between Karura and Laodikeia on Lykos . Aristoxenus wrote a paper on the medical teaching of the Herophilees ( περὶ τῆς Ἡροφίλου αἱρέσεως ) in at least 13 books. The 13th book, in which Aristoxenus treated the pulse definitions of his school, was used in the 2nd century AD by the important physician Galenus as a source in his work on the distinction between pulses (ancient Greek περὶ διαφορᾶς σφυγμῶν ).
