The Arktikum is a museum in the center of Rovaniemi , Finland .

The vaulted glass, visible from afar and pointing northwards like a finger, is only the core of the museum emerging from the outside. The Arktikum actually consists of two institutions, the Provincial Museum of Lapland and the Arctic Center .

The Arctic Center

The Arctic Center houses the Institute for the Northern Environment and for Minority Rights. This focuses on research into the rights of the indigenous population , for example the right to their own language and culture.

The Arctic Center also offers an information service . This facility provides information about arctic areas. In addition, the information service is involved in the creation of an information network for the Barents region , as well as in the creation of a network that encompasses the entire polar regions .

The Finnbarents organization is an organization of skilled workers who specialize in their work in the regions of the north, especially north-west Russia, but also in other areas of Russia and the Baltic States .

The Provincial Museum of Lapland

The Provincial Museum of Lapland presents with its exhibition Paths of the North peoples of the North and tells the history of Lapland . Impressions from the Sami culture are conveyed by exhibits of Sami handicrafts as well as the traditional costumes of the Sami , which are exhibited here. The museum shows changing exhibitions. This refers to life in the whole of Lapland, but also to the life of the Sami people in Lapland.
