Ethernet connection box

Wired socket

An Ethernet connection socket ( EAD ) is a socket for Ethernet connections ( 10BASE2 , 10 Mbit / s). In the days of coaxial cabling, it was a more reliable alternative to the otherwise common T-pieces . EAD are often duplicated in order to enable two computers to be connected. Special EAD cables are always required.

functionality

The EAD was developed from the TAE socket for the telephone. However, the plug and socket are coded differently ("E") so that the EAD plug could not be accidentally plugged into a telephone connection. Internally, the EAD has two connections for the coaxial cable common with Thinwire Ethernet .

As with TAE, the opposite contacts of an unused socket touch each other. When plugged in, they are pushed apart - there is a more or less brief interruption in the bus - and reconnected via the connector and the double coaxial cable connected to it. The T-piece with the bus branch is integrated at the end with the BNC connector. Incorrect sockets, plugs or cables can cause bus interruptions or standing waves .

A further developed variant is scEAD ( screened EAD ), which also uses shielding in the connector. The plugs have a corresponding collar and the sockets have a recess around the actual contacts, which means that scEAD cables do not fit into standard EAD sockets.

The EAD was developed in the early 1980s and for the first time enabled IT administrators to add or remove network components without having to completely shut down the system. When 10BASE2 technology became obsolete in the mid-1990s, EADs became increasingly obsolete.

Most EAD installations are now likely to have been replaced by more reliable twisted pair cabling with 8P8C sockets and faster Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet .
