Armageddon (game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Armageddon is a tabletop - strategy game with pin elements, any number of players, a plurality of pieces on a freely configurable at the hexagon field move.

Various actions (for example fights) can be carried out with the figures, the success of which is determined by rolling the dice. The subtitle is "The Strategic Fantasy Game".

The game system

The game board made up of hexagons can be designed in any size and landscape by the players. Different types of terrain are available: sea, lowland, swamp, mountains, forest and others. The types of terrain have an impact on staying, moving and fighting. There are also rivers. Since there can be up to 4 units on a hexagonal field, a side length of approx. 18 mm or more is recommended. This means that the game board can be very large; the game boards in the Magira game world each have a diameter of 2 m.

Capitals, cities and markets, which are collectively referred to as trading centers or arming centers, are defined on the game board. The aim of the game is to conquer as many of these trading centers as possible. The land is either distributed to the players at the start of the game, or everyone receives just a small primeval empire, and the other trading centers form non-player empires that can be conquered.

Each player receives an equal number of warriors and building units that can be converted into war equipment and buildings. You can choose from animals such as horses and elephants, devices such as onagers, ladders, siege towers, ships such as sailing or long ships, structures such as trenches, walls or towers. The magic comes into play through mythical creatures and wizards.

In a round it is each player's turn: he first moves his units, then the units can take action and fight. A distinction is made between close and long-range combat. Character and terrain characteristics influence the minimum values the roll of three dice must have in order to achieve a certain result: victory or survival of a warrior, sinking of a ship, destruction of a tower, etc.

The fight forms the tactical level. The strategic level is that players can freely form alliances with each other. If you want, the tactical combat system can be embedded in a world simulation that provides rules for a peace game. Every player thinks of a culture for his realm that can be based on fantastic or historical models or is completely fictitious. Since the rules of the game are designed to make it difficult for a player to win over the long term, the game can easily last many game evenings, so these cultures can be developed between games. There are extensions to the rules such as large rounds, secret constellations, scouting, setting up, seasons.

The Eternal Game on Magira is played on every year at the Festival of Fantasy , now on four disks, and even after more than fifty years there is no end in sight. The rules of the Eternal Game are evolving every year, but are still essentially the same as the original Armageddon.

The special thing about Armageddon:

  • The rulebook, templates for the game board and cut-out sheets for the playing figures are supplied
  • The players design the game board themselves.
  • A very detailed regulatory framework is given. Players can choose the rule areas they want and leave out the others.
  • A large amount of detail is offered: a lot of terrain forms, a multitude of warriors, animals and material.

The current delivery includes "84 A4 pages of rules in 18 separate chapters with 8 Magira cards. 1 m² playing area and 521 figures on 24 A4 cardboard boxes."

history

At the end of the 1960s, Edi Lukschandl and Hubert Straßl developed a game based on a hexagonal plan , called the game world Lands of Wonder , which later became Magira and Armageddon.

FOLLOW was founded at the Science Fiction Con in Vienna in 1966. It was a game simulation based in Magira, operated by an enthusiastic group, mainly Viennese fantasy and game fans. The first Armageddon game took place on March 30, 1968. Shortly afterwards, the first Armageddon rulebook appeared in Follow 6. These rules were very different from the current rules. In 1975 the 3rd Armageddon set of rules appeared, the rules had been heavily revised, mainly by Franz Schröpf.

The EDFC ( First German Fantasy Club ) was founded in 1978 , the 5th edition of the rules appeared in 1981 by the EDFC, which is the owner of the rights to this day.
