Armstrong Siddeley Viper

The Armstrong Siddeley Viper is a turbojet engine that was developed and built by the British company Armstrong Siddeley . Since the company later merged into Bristol Siddeley and Rolls-Royce , the engine was also known as the Bristol Siddeley Viper or Rolls Royce Viper.

history

The engine's first test runs took place in 1951. It was put into service in 1953 and was used in the Royal Air Force's HS.125 / BAe-125 Dominie training aircraft until January 2011 . It was originally developed as a simple, inexpensive "lost device" to drive the Australian "Jindivik" target display drones , but was later developed into a standard engine through the use of better materials. The original ASV.3 with 1640 lb thrust, as a "Jindivik" drive, only had a planned service life of ten hours. The later models ASV.5 and ASV.6 (with 1900 lb thrust), as well as the version ASV.8 with 1750 lb thrust, were designed for a much longer service life due to the improvements and new materials. Improvements made by the Sapphire resulted in the ASV.11 with 2460 lb thrust and the weaker ASV.10 with 2000 lb thrust for a longer service life. The Viper 20 and the Viper 30 were added later. In total, more than 5500 engines of this type were built.
