Arnold (Münsterschwarzach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arnold († April 22, before 1277 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery Münsterschwarzach from 1272 until his death .

Münsterschwarzach before Arnold

The monastery Münsterschwarzach and its abbots are attested in the 13th century only very few sources. Some monastery rulers were therefore not known to the older depictions. For the respective predecessor or successor, this means that their terms of office and dates of death can vary greatly from abbot series to abbot series. Abbot Arnold's predecessor, Rudiger von Langheim , however, named his successor for life.

Life

Nothing is known about Arnold's origins and youth. It appeared for the first time during his ordination in 1272 in the sources, which took place during the lifetime of Rudiger von Langheim. A year later, following a possible resignation of Rudiger, Arnold officially became abbot. He died very soon, even before he could be introduced as abbot. Many events ascribed to Abbot Arnold happened under his successor Sigiloch . Arnold died on April 22nd before the year 1277.

Individual evidence

  1. While the year of death is unclear for Heinrich Wagner (p. 130), some other representations assume the year 1290. However, this is impossible because Abbot Sigiloch was already running the monastery at that time. Compare: Leo Trunk: The Abbots of Münsterschwarzach . P. 154 f.
