Sigiloch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sigiloch († possibly 1288) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery Münsterschwarzach . As such, however, he is only entered in Heinrich Wagner's abbot series. For this reason, the term of office of this abbot has not been recorded. Wagner assumes an abbatiat in the seventies and eighties of the 13th century.

Münsterschwarzach before Sigiloch

Abbot Sigiloch was already the twenty-eighth abbot to head the Münsterschwarzach monastery. After the abbey was finally subordinated to the Würzburg bishops , who turned the monastery into an episcopal monastery, abbots were mainly appointed to consolidate the reforms of Gorze . Along with many others, the later Saint Egbert von Münsterschwarzach particularly distinguished himself here .

With the 12th century Gorze slowly lost its charisma. Now the Hirsau reforms from the Black Forest were the measure of all things. The bishops immediately had Abbot Dietrich I brought to the Main Abbey; he should implement the renewals. The 13th century began with the failure of the reforms, which nevertheless had some influence on the abbey. The following poverty of sources ensured that some abbots are not known to the monastery chroniclers. The anniversary of Abbot Arnold's death is also controversial.

Life

Sigiloch was first handed down as prior of Münsterschwarzach in 1260. As abbot he also did not appear in the abbot ranks of the monastery chroniclers, so that his predecessor was assigned a term of 18 years. Sigiloch was first mentioned on September 23, 1277, when he concluded a prayer fraternity in a document with the Würzburg city monastery St. Stephan . At this point in time he would have been abbot.

Another document that mentions Sigiloch dates back to 1281. However, the name of the abbot of Münsterschwarzach was not explicitly mentioned here. On December 20, 1283, his name appeared again in the monastery documents. In the same year, a dispute between Counts Henneberg and Castell , against the Bishopric of Würzburg, also spread to the monastery property: the city of Schwarzach and the monastery itself were looted, but were saved from total destruction.

During his tenure, Abbot Sigiloch took care of buying back the pledged monastery properties, despite the constant threat of war. With the consent of Würzburg Bishop Berthold II von Sternberg , Münsterschwarzach acquired the bailiwick of Gerlachshausen back from the widow Gertrud von Zabelstein . Sigiloch was last mentioned in 1285. He probably died in 1288, as his successor first appeared in the sources in 1289. The exact date is unknown.
