Dietrich I. (Münsterschwarzach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dietrich I († July 5, 1142 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Münsterschwarzach from 1126 or 1137 to 1142 .

Münsterschwarzach before Dietrich

The centuries before Abbot Dietrich I took office in the Münsterschwarzach Abbey were shaped by the monastic reforms of monastic life in the monastery. In particular, the reforms of Gorze , which were to anchor choral prayer more firmly in the life of the monks, helped the monastery to survive even in difficult times. The abbots Alapold and Egbert von Münsterschwarzach stood out in the dissemination of these reforms .

At the beginning of the 12th century, however, other monasteries took over the reform efforts. Gorze was no longer the center for the East Franconian abbeys. The Hirsau Monastery took over this position more and more . Under Dietrich's predecessor, Abbot Wolfram , monks came from the monastery to the Main Abbey to accelerate the local reform process. At the same time, however, the plague raged in the vicinity of the monastery and decimated the convent.

Life

Dietrich was first mentioned in the sources when he came to Münsterschwarzach with some confreres from the Hirsau monastery. It can be assumed that Dietrich had been in the Black Forest monastery for a number of years before he could be burdened with the difficult journey. He had probably already internalized the reforms that he was supposed to bring to the Main Abbey. In 1126 or 1137, in which year Abbot Wolfram died, Dietrich succeeded him as abbot .

Due to the poor sources, only a few official acts of Abbot Dietrich are transmitted. In 1139 he acted as a witness on a document from the Würzburg bishop Embricho . In the same year he was mentioned on a document that was given to the nunnery in Kitzingen. On December 5, 1141 he appeared again on a document. Abbot Dietrich I died on July 5, 1142 and left a thriving monastery to his successors.
