The Arnold Bakery ( Arnold Bakery ), also known as Southern Barber Shop , is a historic commercial building in Austin , Texas . It is located in the eastern part of central Austin and was built around 1890. In addition to being used as a bakery, the building also served the Afro-American community for many other purposes over the course of the 20th century, including as a dining room and an artist's studio with accommodation. In 2000, the crumbling building was acquired by the Austin Revitalization Authority as part of an urban renewal project and then sold to a local design company, which renovated the building from 2002 to 2003. In 2004 the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
