Thackray attended Manchester Grammar School and studied chemistry at the University of Bristol with a bachelor's degree in 1960. He then worked for a while in industry before turning to the history of science in 1962, which he initially studied part-time at Leeds University and from 1963 at Cambridge University, where he received his doctorate in 1966 with Mary Hesse and became a Fellow of Churchill College. In 1967 he went to the USA. He was Joseph Priestley Professor at the University of Pennsylvania , where he founded the Department of History and Sociology of Science. In 1982 he founded the Center for the History of Chemistry, which in 1992 became the Chemical Heritage Foundation , of which he was long-time President and of which he is Chancellor.

In 1983 he received the Dexter Award . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Royal Historical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1991). He was visiting scholar at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, at the Institute for Advanced Study (1980), in Cambridge (All Souls College 1977/78), at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in Stanford, at the London School of Economics (1971 / 72 as a Guggenheim Fellow), at Harvard and Oxford.

Thackray was editor of Isis from 1978 to 1985 and of Osiris from 1985 to 1994. From 1982 to 1983 he was President of the Society for Social Studies of Science.
