Arnoldus Mermannus

Arnoldus Mermannus OFMConv (* in Aalst ; † September 5, 1578 in Leuven in Flanders ) was a Flemish minorite who taught theology in Leuven.

Life

Mermannus, also known as Alostanus because of his origins , entered the De Valk pedagogy in Leuven on August 30, 1546 to study art and received his Magister Artium on March 21, 1549. As a member of the Order of the Minorites , he was appointed deacon in Leuven in December 1552 and ordained a priest in May 1553 in the Franciscan monastery in Brussels. He dressed in his order a. A. the offices of Definitor (1565) and Provincial (1565–1568 in Mechelen and 1568–1570 in Leuven).

Arnoldus Mermannus mainly wrote controversial theological treatises in which he advocated the truth of the Catholic faith as valid from his point of view against people whom he regarded as heretics . His best-known and most frequently cited work, Theatrvm Conversionis, is the first known attempt by a Catholic author to summarize the ancient church and medieval missionary history.

Mermannus died of the plague in Leuven in 1578 .
