Report from the Arnsberg Intelligence Gazette of September 27, 1803 about the hereditary homage of the estates in favor of Ludwig von Hessen-Darmstadt

The Arnsberg Intelligence Journal appeared between 1766 and 1819. It was the first regular newspaper in the Duchy of Westphalia .

history

Since the 18th century, regular newspapers and magazines began to appear in Westphalia . In particular, after the Seven Years' War, so-called intelligence sheets were created in most of the larger territories . In Arnsberg on October 6, 1766, at the instigation of the court councilor Johann Wilhelm Arndts, the printer Eberhard Herken received the electoral privilege not only for a publishing house and a printer, but also for the publication of the Arnsberg Intelligence Gazette. The approval stated: "So that the common man may also be aware of the events in the country ..." It was also determined that the authorities had to subscribe to a copy for each parish. The sheet should "be displayed at the most distinguished landlord or head of every place so that everyone can see it on Sundays and public holidays."

This paper was published regularly twice a week. Actually, the intelligence sheet should only contain official notices and advertisements. Herken has also published other things. This included poems such as the numerous occasional Latin poems by the Councilor Caspar Theodor Georg Pape. He has also printed general political and local news. Some of these were also offensive. Therefore, he got into conflict with the authorities.

That is why he handed the sheet over to a cousin Johann Franz Herken. During the Hessian rule from 1803 to 1816, the authorities urged the paper to adopt a strictly pro-government stance. In 1816 the sheet adapted to the new Prussian sovereigns just as quickly.

After the land passed to Prussia, the new government in Arnsberg intended to publish its own newspaper. It bought his license from Herken in 1819 and has since published the “Official Gazette of the Royal Government”. Since this did not adequately meet the information needs of the citizens, the then law firm accountant CA Düser has published the Arnsberger Wochenblatt since 1820.
