Aroe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aroe ( ancient Greek Ἀρόη ) was a city in ancient Greece, from which, together with the places Antheia and Mesatis, the city of Patrai emerged through Synoikismos .

The aetiological legend about Aroe has been handed down through Pausanias . The ruler of the country was Eumelos , who received knowledge of agriculture and the founding of a city from the cultural hero Triptolemus . He named the newly founded city after the farmland (ancient Greek ἄροσις ) Aroe . Pausanias further reports that Patreus after the expulsion of the Ionians of Achaia the Achaeans banned the settlement in Antheia and Mesatis and instead a large wall around Aroe built. He named the newly created city Patrai after himself.
