Assarunik
Arsharunik ( Armenian Արշարունիք ,) was a historical district of Armenia , part of the Ayrarat (Այրարատ) province , north of the Araxes River . In early history the area was known as Eraskhadzor . The important fortress Artagerk ("Artageras" near Strabo ) belonged to the district, which is larger than today's province of Armavir . The region was later made famous by the Gamrdzhazor Monastery .

According to legend, the Apostle Bartholomew in the Arsharunik area and the Apostle Thadeus in the Artaz area (in the Iranian province of Azerbaijan ) spread Christianity among the Armenians as early as the 1st century AD . Around the 10th century, the area of Shirak and Arsharunik was under the rule of the Kamsarakan dynasty .
