history

2008: The first Art on Snow

The first Art on Snow took place from December 6th to 13th, 2008 in several locations in Riezlern in the Kleinwalsertal. The heart of the first edition were exhibitions from the areas of ski and snowboard design. Photography exhibitions and workshops, an exhibition on the history and development of snowboards, design workshops and movie screenings of the latest ski and snowboard films complemented the festival program.

As part of the first Art on Snow, the most elaborate snowboard film of all time "That's it, That's all" and the freeski film "AESTIVATION" were presented.

2009: The second Art on Snow

From December 12th to 19th, 2009 the second edition of Art on Snow took place in Kleinwalsertal. When the exhibition moved to the Walserhaus in Hirschegg - the central event location in the Kleinwalsertal - the exhibition area doubled and the festival expanded to almost the entire valley.

2012: The third Art on Snow

What was originally conceived as a very special winter opening was intended to serve the purpose of creating added value for the guests in the Gastein Valley.

After some adjustments to the concept, the first Art on Snow Gastein opened its doors from February 4th to 11th, 2012 in the villages of Dorfgastein, Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein.

In addition to the well-known components of ski and snowboard design, photography, movie screening and various workshops, the field of contemporary art was also integrated. Due to the postponement of the event from December to February 2012, the art forms of snow and ice carving could also be presented for the first time.

Starting from the summit of the Fulseck via Dorfgastein to Bad Hofgastein via the Schlossalmbahn summit station on to the Kaserebenbahn summit station down in Angertal and back up to the summit of the Stubnerkogel down to Badgastein and finally to the end of the Gasteinertal to Sportgastein - and transforms the entire Gasteinertal into one Length of 26 kilometers in a huge gallery.

2013: The fourth Art on Snow

An artwork was created for the first time to communicate the fourth Art on Snow. The artist collective “Loslohbros” (consisting of Andy and Tom Lohner from Graz) developed a figure with the name “Snow Queen” in collaboration with the Finnish artist “jolimaa”, who also served as a template. The fictional character's robe consisted of skis and snowboards as well as ski sticks.

The new Art on Snow 2013 logo was also communicated for the first time.

In close cooperation with the Gastein Valley Tourism Association, the festival concept was adapted once more. The photo and video workshops were replaced by a painting workshop. In general, it was decided to do more outdoor activities (the number of snow sculptures was doubled) in order to attract more visitors.

For the first time, huge 3D drawings were presented in the towns of Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein, as well as multimedia video presentations in all three towns with the “Videoattack”.

2014: The fifth Art on Snow

The concept was revised once more and it was decided to move all exhibitions and activities outdoors and put even more focus on snow and ice carving. New additions were the “Big is beautiful” painting workshop, which took place at the end of the Fulseckbahn valley run, and the “Glow in the Dark” photo exhibition, for which 10 huge illuminated showcases were built so that the images could be presented around the clock. A special art experience, especially in the dark.

The event took place from February 1st to 7th, 2014.

The artwork was implemented by the artist collective “Loslohbros” and symbolizes a mythical creature - half eagle, half human.

2015: The sixth Art on Snow

The sixth edition of Art on Snow took place from January 31 to February 6, 2015. A special highlight was the display of the culture pavilion in Bad Gastein “White Noise” or “Artificial hedgehog”, as it was affectionately known, which was made available to the Gastein Valley by SalzburgerLand Tourismus. The “White Noise” served as an event space for various cultural events throughout the summer months. Without the inner shell (roof) in winter, the "Kuntigel" lives up to its name and resembles a huge, lifeless metal hedgehog. “Inside”, but still exposed to the weather conditions, a photo exhibition took place here (the works were printed on glass plates) with selected photographers from the “Snowboard Photography Yearbook 2012/2013” by J érô me Tanon.

The artwork was implemented by the artist collective “Loslohbros” 50 and symbolized a mythical creature - half capricorn, half human.

2016: The seventh Art on Snow

After intensive discussions with the artists, it was decided to present the Art on Snow, which took place from January 30th to February 5th, 2016, for the first time under a uniform theme - the Gastein legends. The reasons for this were better opportunities for the artists to prepare and coordinate with one another, as well as a “common thread” of the event for visitors.

“Audio-video storytelling” (multimedia live performance) was integrated into the festival program as a completely new art element. Another highlight and new item on the program were the oversized snow pictures by Simon Beck , which were only "painted" in the snow using snowshoes.

The artwork was implemented by the artist collective “Loslohbros” and symbolized a mythical creature - half capricorn, half human.

2017: The eighth Art on Snow

The theme for the eighth Art on Snow from January 28th to February 3rd, 2017 was "Water". In addition to the "audio-video storytelling", this time the world premiere of a mapping show projected onto a specially designed snow sculpture was part of the multimedia live performances. Also new were the “Pistenraupenballett” during the opening ceremony and an installation made of wood, styrofoam and cotton fabrics in the thermal water pond in Bad Hofgastein.

2018: The ninth Art on Snow

The theme of the event, which took place from January 27 to February 2, 2018, was the 60th anniversary of the “Alpine Ski World Championships of 1958” in Bad Gastein. For the first time, an ice carving competition was part of the program.

2019: The tenth Art on Snow

For the tenth Art on Snow from January 26th to February 1st, 2019, the theme was “Winter in Gastein - Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow."

After the premiere of the ice carving competition last year was a complete success, this time the interactive building block was used again and an ice carving workshop was also integrated.

2020: The eleventh Art on Snow

From February 1 to February 7, 2020, the eleventh Art on Snow took place under the theme "Forest dwellers".

Almost 30 artists transformed the Gastein Valley into a veritable alpine zoo during the “Wienerferienwoche”. Wolves, owls, bears and many other forest dwellers emerged from snow and ice.
