Artas (glass manufacturer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Artas was an ancient glass maker from the 1st century AD.

Artas is only known through a number of signed glass vessels. From him drinking vessels ( Scyphi ) and handle shells ( Paterae and Trullae ) are known, in which the name and location ARTAS SIDON in Latin or Greek was pressed with pliers into the still malleable material of the handle.

It is unclear whether Artas was born in Sidon or whether he also ran his workshop there. The majority of the archaeological finds of the vessels signed by Artas come from the west of the Roman Empire , especially from Italy. If the workshop was located in Palestine , this distribution pattern indicates intensive long-distance trade.
