history
Although there are no medieval buildings, the first settlement of the square goes back further. In the Islamic period , however, the area was depopulated and so it was probably the hermit monks of the Hieronymites Order, newly founded here, who brought new impulses to the area since the 14th century.
Attractions
- The three-aisled parish church of San Pedro Apóstol , covered with an open roof , was built in the 16th century. The star vault in the choir area and in the apse makes the late construction of the church clearer than the nave.
- The large square ( plaza mayor ) is located south of the town center and is surrounded by two-story arcade and timber frame houses.
- On a stepped base in the middle of the square rises a baroque channeled court column ( rollo jurisdiccional or picota ) with a four-headed angel capital and an obelisk with a ball. In their sacrosanct surroundings, trials took place and wrongdoers were punished and / or put on display.
- The ruins of the Jeronimos Monastery ( Monasterio Jerónimo de San Bartolomé ) stand about one and a half kilometers south of the village in the seclusion of the forest. It all began probably around the middle of the 14th century with several hermit huts ( hermitages ) and a small communal chapel; the official establishment of the religious community took place with the permission of Pope Gregory XI. in 1373. The construction of a monastery complex with a cloister and surrounding monk cells did not begin until 100 years later. Of the former monastery buildings, the double, sometimes even three-story cloister in the Plateresque style of the beginning of the 16th century is particularly impressive ; the plans are said to come from Alonso de Covarrubias . The balustrades and arches of the various floors are designed differently. The church facade is kept simple and strict - perhaps Philip II received suggestions for the construction of the Escorial during a visit here , the care and maintenance of which was also in the hands of the Hieronymites.
