As a result of the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting unemployment in the countryside, the population of the municipality has decreased significantly since the middle of the 20th century.

economy

Agriculture played the most important role in the economic life of the municipality (agriculture, cattle breeding as well as wine and olive cultivation), which in earlier centuries mainly served for self-sufficiency . But also small traders and craftsmen have settled in the village since the end of the Middle Ages.

history

The origins of the place are in the dark, as Celtic - Iberian , Roman , Visigoth and even Moorish traces are missing. Possibly the place arose only in the phase of resettlement ( repoblación ) after the reconquest ( reconquista ) of Toledo in 1085. Already in 1394, the Castilian king Henry III. (r. 1390–1406) the town rights and put the captain general Diego Hurtado de Mendoza († 1404) from the house of Mendoza as a representative. Henry IV of Castile - after the reestablishment of the County of Tendilla in 1465 - appointed his son, Íñigo López de Mendoza y Figueroa († 1479), as 1st Count of Tendilla. His son, Íñigo López de Mendoza y Quiñones († 1515) continued the family line and became 2nd Count of Tendilla. The 3rd count, Luis Hurtado de Mendoza y Pacheco († 1566), gave the order to build the church.

Attractions

Tendilla - Iglesia de la Asunción
  • Many houses in the village have wooden pillars on the street side (soportales) , so that the shops behind them could be easily reached even in rainy weather or in strong sunlight.
  • The Iglesia de la Asunción is one of the few examples of an unfinished church. The order was given to the architect Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón (1500–1577) around 1540; he planned a large hall church 56 m long and 25 m wide. The subsequent architects were reluctant to continue the work due to a lack of funds - so the church remained unfinished, but usable. At the end of the 18th century the free-standing bell tower (campanario) was built , which showed structural damage within a few years, so that the number of bells had to be reduced from 4 to 2.
  • Only ruins remain of the former Hieronymites monastery.
  • The Museo Encarnación Díaz de Yela is dedicated to rural life in the La Alcarria region .
Surroundings
  • The former Franciscan monastery (Convento de Nuestra Señora de la Salceda), located just under 3 km northeast of the village, is also in ruins.
