Alaminos is a central Spanish city and a municipality ( municipio ) with a total of only 60 inhabitants (as at 1st January 2019) in the province of Guadalajara in the autonomous region of Castile-La Mancha . The municipality belongs to the sparsely populated region of the Serranía Celtibérica .

Location and climate

The place Alaminos is located on the west side of the Iberian Mountains at an altitude of approx. 1065  m . The provincial capital Guadalajara is approx. 53 km (driving distance) to the southwest. The climate in winter is temperate, while in summer it is warm to hot; the rather low amounts of precipitation (approx. 455 mm / year) fall - with the exception of the almost rainless summer months - distributed over the whole year.

Population development

Due to the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting loss of jobs, the population of the municipality has declined sharply since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).

economy

Also because of the altitude of the place, the economy for centuries was essentially based on self-sufficiency ; urban markets were too far away. Agriculture was only possible to a very limited extent in the mountainous and rocky landscape; Therefore, the main focus was on livestock farming , the durable products of which (cheese, meat and wool) were sometimes bought by traveling traders.

history

Little is known about the local history, as the place is not mentioned in any older document; one must therefore assume that the high-lying area was not inhabited until the early and high Middle Ages, but was only used as summer pasture. Even the Islamic-Moorish armies did not penetrate this remote mountain region. A permanent settlement did not take place until the end of the Middle Ages.

Attractions

Town hall with baffle wall (frontón)
  • The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción , built in the 16th century, is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . The west side has no portal, but is surmounted by a two-part bell gable (espadaña) ; the unadorned entrance is on the south side. The church has a single nave; the vestibule is compared with the nave (nature) slightly retracted.
  • An imposing court column (rollo or picota) rises on a three-tiered round base in the village square . This dates from the 16th century and was a symbol of the independent jurisdiction of the place. According to local tradition, trials and convictions took place here.
  • The town hall is housed in a representative building from the 18th century. One side of the gable is taken up by a baffle wall (frontón) for the pelota game.
