The municipality belongs to the sparsely populated region of the Serranía Celtibérica .
Location and climate
The almost 600 m high place Zorita de los Canes is located on the Tajo River in the extreme south of the Alcarria landscape in the north of the southern part of the Iberian Plateau ( meseta ) . The provincial capital Guadalajara is approx. 50 km (driving distance) in a north-westerly direction; the lovely town of Pastrana is just under 12 km north. The climate in winter is temperate, while in summer it is warm to hot; the rather low amounts of precipitation (approx. 405 mm / year) fall - with the exception of the almost rainless summer months - distributed over the whole year.

As a result of the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting loss of jobs, the population of the municipality has decreased significantly since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).
economy
The people of earlier centuries lived mainly as self-sufficiency from agriculture and livestock farming , whose durable products (cheese, sausage, animal skins and wool) could be exchanged or sold at traveling traders.
history
Celts , Romans and Visigoths left no usable traces on the municipality and even the Moors left almost nothing behind except the castle ( kasbah or alcazaba ) . In the second half of the 11th century they were taken over by King Alfonso VI's army . driven out of the region by León ( reconquista ) . In 1124 the place and castle were taken by the Knights Templar ; Fifty years later, Alfonso VIII of Castile gave both of them to the Knights of the Order of Calatrava , but they reverted to the Castilian crown in the early 13th century . In 1565 Philip II gave the manorial rule (señorio) over the place to the nobleman Ruy Gómez de Silva , who had just been appointed Duke of Pastrana , who died a few years later (1573). His wife, Ana de Mendoza y de la Cerda , the "Princess of Eboli", continued the regiment until her death in 1592.
Attractions
- The origins of the castle (castillo or alcazaba) probably go back to the 10th century; Visigoth origins are also brought into play. It is enthroned on a rock, whose irregular shape it absorbs and even reinforces. Several entrances (some with horseshoe arches) lead to an inner courtyard, the center of which is occupied by a single-nave Romanesque church with a crypt . The rib vault of the apse and some capitals decorated with abstract designs have been preserved in the church.
- The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was built in the 16th century as a three-aisled church; the two-part bell gable (espadaña) is a later addition. The interior of the church is spanned by wooden ceilings. A possibly Visigoth font (pila bautismal) has been preserved.
- Surroundings
- Approx. The excavation site of the Visigothic city of Reccopolis is 2 km south of the village .
