Miedes de Atienza is a central Spanish town and municipality ( municipio ) with only 59 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the extreme north of the province of Guadalajara in the autonomous region of Castile-La Mancha . The municipality belongs to the sparsely populated region of the Serranía Celtibérica . Miedes de Atienza is located on the Ruta de la Lana, which was once often used by traders and pilgrims, and on the Camino del Cid, which was only developed in the second half of the 20th century for tourist reasons .
Location and climate
Miedes de Atienza, at an altitude of almost 1155 m , is located on the south side of the Iberian Mountains in the headwaters of numerous streams from which the Río Cañamares , a tributary of the Río Henares , is formed. The provincial capital Guadalajara is approx. 100 km (driving distance) to the south; the lovely small town of Atienza is a good 13 km southeast. The climate in winter is temperate, while in summer it is warm to hot; the rather low amounts of precipitation (approx. 510 mm / year) fall - with the exception of the almost rainless summer months - distributed over the whole year.

Due to the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting loss of jobs in the countryside, the number of inhabitants in the municipality has declined sharply since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).
economy
Due to the altitude of the community, farming was only possible to a very limited extent. That is why they devoted themselves - primarily to self-sufficiency - to livestock farming , whose durable or preserved products (animal skins and wool as well as cheese and sausages) were exchanged with traveling traders on the Ruta de la Lana or sold to them.
history
The origin of the place is in the dark. Originally the place was probably just a summer pasture for the herds of sheep from the valley. Probably only after the reconquest ( reconquista ) of the region by Alfonso VI. from León at the end of the 11th century a place developed that was first mentioned in a document in the High Middle Ages.
Attractions
- With the exception of the corner stones, the houses of the village, built almost exclusively from rubble stones, give it a fairly uniform appearance. Some houses - including today's town hall - have heraldic shields made of stone .
- Of the Iglesia de la Natividad de la Santísima Virgen , which was built in the 13th century , only parts of the three apses remain. The nave (nave) was renewed in the late 18th century and plastered white inside. The three baroque altars are noteworthy .
- The lower part of a former court column (rollo) has been integrated into a well basin.
