The house of Mendoza ( Spanish Casa de Mendoza ) was a widespread and historically significant family dynasty in medieval and early modern Spain . It originally came from the small town of Mendoza (now a suburb of the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz ) in the province of Álava in the Basque Country ; their center of power was later in what is now the province of Guadalajara .

history

The line consisting of knights of lower nobility ( hidalgos ) had its origin in the 11th century with Íñigo López († 1076), the first landlord (señor) of the Vizcaya region. One of his successors, Íñigo López de Mendoza, was the builder of the castle (torre) at the beginning of the 13th century . The rise of the family at the Castilian court was slow but steady - Pedro González de Mendoza († 1385) contributed to the growing importance and prosperity of the family and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza († 1404) was already Grand Admiral .

In 1445 the county (condado) Real de Manzanares was created, whose first title holder Iñigo López de Mendoza († 1458), the 11th Señor de Mendoza , was. The Cardinal Pedro González de Mendoza († 1495), was chancellor at the court of King Henry IV of Castile.
